River grabbed their first away victory in the Torneo Clausura, defeating an underwhelming Vélez Sársfield side 2-0 yesterday afternoon.

Los millonarios played one of their strongest 45 minutes this season during the first half, with superb performances from Diego Buonanotte and Alexis Sánchez, the later of whom scored a beautiful goal in the 9th minute. Radamel Falcao followed up with an equally impressive goal of his own only a few minutes later. Vélez, one of teams expected to make a run for the title, looked uncharacteristically out of sorts, and unable to put together any sort of attack, which River was able to exploit.

The second half was a completely different matter, with River looking average and Vélez continuing to struggle. Despite some excellent saves from Juan Pablo Carrizo, Vélez never really looked like a threat, and in the end River secured a deserved victory.

This was a massively important 3 points for Diego Simeone’s squad, coming off of 2 hugely disappointing draws in the league and thus failing to gain ground in the standings. And with so many questions about this years team, especially in defense, it was great to see such a solid effort from la banda, especially in the first half.

The future looks bright for the club, sitting in second in the Torneo and alive in the Copa Libertadores. Simeone, perhaps having found his way at his new home, will now need to keep the team steady if they are to win some long overdue silverware. Up next, another must-win in the Copa this Wednesday, at home against Universidad Católica.

Notes: The family of murdered Emmanuel Alvarez was invited onto the pitch prior to the start of the match. As they passed in front of the River supporters section, they received a warm applause. Still no word however on the identity of his killer.
