Thoughts On Our New Coach

Diego Simeone

Yes, I know that I’ve been late in covering this story, but I spent the last week catching up on some things here in Chicago and thus wasn’t here to comment when the news broke. Regardless, I thought I would finally give my take on River Plate’s new head coach, Diego Simeone.

I’ve clearly been a fan of Simeone and long considered him to be the right man to replace Daniel Passarella. He instantly brings a commanding presence to the dressing room; the players know what he has accomplished both as a former captain of Argentina and as a manager, and should instantly earn their respect. But most importantly, if things go the way they did at his previous job, he’ll stabilize an erratic River squad that has some great talent, but overall lacks a center, an identity, a talisman to take the team on his back and lead them. Yes, Passarella was also a great player and manager, but from the beginning of his reign last year, he seemed to have lost the plot early on, and either by arrogance, ignorance, or stubbornness, lost the confidence of the players and the fans. So while it may sound like a stretch, Simeone in a way represents a changing of the guard, a complete wiping of the slate from River’s recent bad fortune, and hopefully we can expect the same results he got at Estudiantes with la banda.

Of course the tools that Simeone will have at his disposal will tell just how successful he can be in the league and in the Copa Libertadores. With rumors swirling about who might be coming in (Andrés D’Alessandro?) and who might be on the way out (Falcao?), Simeone must be given the resources and support from the board to arm the team he feels necessary to compete.

All in all, I feel confident about River moving forward into the new year, and I give River all the credit for going after whom I think is the best man for the job. So welcome Cholo, and all the best of luck to you. All I ask for is the league, the Copa, and to beat Boca. AGUANTE RIVER!

Very excited by the news that DS has joined and can’t wait to see him and River in action, D’Alessandro would be a great buy, any more news on this?

No news so far, but the last I heard it wasn’t looking very good. Then again, there’s still a month to go before the season begins so you never know.
