River Punished for Violent Incidents

By: Christian | April 8th, 2008

The Minister of Security and Justice today banned fans from the terraces of the Monumental stadium for two home fixtures, in response to the violent clashes between barra bravas two weeks ago at the Amalfitani. The games affected will include this weekend’s match against Tigre, and in two weeks time against Argentinos Juniors. Tickets for the seated sections of the stadium will be made available to club members only.

While it was thought that the club would receive a harsher sentence, either by being forced to use
a different stadium or even playing behind closed doors, today’s announcement is considerably light by comparison.

Does this punishment seem like an adequate response to the disgraceful scenes we saw prior to the game against Arsenal? And are we to expect that by this action future incidents can be avoided? As we have seen in Argentina before, today’s decision is both too much, and not enough.

Better this than a points deduction, will the Barra Bravas take note and keep the fighting out of the stadiums?

The Barra Bravas will still show up as many of them are club employees and members anyway. I agree it is better than a points deduction but it does nothing to address the real problem. I believe that the violence can be stopped but many more things need to occur before it can be addressed. And at the rate we’re going, we’re not going to be able to revert he situation, only remedy it.

Guess what they’ll do next… more fences? Less responsibility on the fans causing the violence, that’s for sure.

My uncle told me that once he went into a liquor store to get some gum or something shortly before a match and saw two policemen in the corner of the store drinking the equivalent to a 40 ouncer of beer each. The problem, other than the obvious, is that the FA and city police forces have instituted laws that prohibit the sale of alcohol within a determined distance from the grounds hosting a match. This was definitely within the determined distance of the grounds, they were on duty, in uniform and they had clearly forced the store owner to sell them alcohol. If the people guarding us are drunk or drinking, than the problem is much deeper than just what happens in the stands.

Agreed Mauro. The barra bravas are all socios, so moving them from the terraces to the stands isn’t really changing anything. In fact, the whole issue of barra bravas is that they are so entrenched within the club. Who doesn’t think that a similar fight could break out in the seats?

Upgrading the stadiums and removing terracing will be the death of the atmosphere at grounds, as is the case in europe, only now the Germans have started re-introducing terracing at the stadiums and the atmosphere and crowd numbers are higher than ever.
The atmosphere and colour in Argentina needs to preserved as hardly anywhere in the world can rival it.

It’s been a long time since the fences came down at grounds in Scotland and England and it works well, I never thought it would, but i was wrong. It is very rare for fighting in the grounds anymore, even at Rangers v Celtic although it still goes on in and around Glasgow in the aftermath.

Lets just hope that River are not too affected by the sanctions and keep the good run going in the league.

I certainly would miss the atmosphere at games, but when you’re talking about fans being shot on the way to stadiums, or knifed battles in the terraces next to innocent fans, something drastic needs to be done. I certainly don’t claim to know the answers to the crisis, but at the bare minimum, the first thing the club needs to do is ban these barra bravas, and enforce thier own policy of right to admission.

Is this River v River fighting on the terraces?
If so, what is the background to this?

Mark, it’s a long story but I’l try to give you a quick synopsis. Amongst River’s barra brava’s, there is currently a struggle for power between two groups who are fighting for control of the terraces. On this particular day, the fight broke out in the stadium, although in the past there have been fights outside the stadium and in the streets. Last year a you man named Gonzalo was shot and killed as a result of this “war,” so what you’re seeing is a continuation of that. One group aligned with Gonzalo against a group believed to have played a part in his death. There’s more, but I don’t want to give them anymore press than they’ve already received.

I don’t know how your Spanish is, but the rest of the River fans throughout the stadium are chanting, “Get out all of you.” As a result, the terraces will be shut down this Sunday.
