River Plate got their 2007 Peace Cup campaign off to a smashing start, as los millonarios defeated Reading FC of England 1-0 in the opening group stage match in Suwon, Korea last night. Matias Abelairas’ free kick in the 28th minute was all River needed to overcome the Royals, with the result tying us for 1st place in Group B. Unfortunately I was unable to watch the game as it was not televised near me, but thankfully the stunning goal is already on YouTube. In other Group B action, Lyon topped Japanese side Shimizu S-Pulse, River’s next opponent this coming Monday night.

Fox Sports has a brief recap here, and the official River Plate site has the group standings.

Full Peace Cup Results

Group A
Bolton Wanderers (ENG) 1-1 Seongnam Ilhwa (KOR)
Chivas Guadalajara (MEX) 5-0 Racing Santander (ESP)

Group B
River Plate (ARG) 1-0 Reading FC (ENG)
l’Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) 2-0 Shimizu S Pulse (JPN)

Hopefully this will be his year. He’s never really lived up to his full potential IMO, and his finishing is nowhere near where it should. Here’s hoping things work out better for him.

How strong is the squad River is sending to the Peace Cup? Mostly youth players, or the full deal?
