River Gives Peace Cup a Chance
By: Christian | June 20th, 2007
River Plate will take part in the third edition of the Peace Cup, a tournament held every two years in South Korea, and featuring teams from around the globe. River have been drawn into Group B with Olympique Lyon, Reading, and Japanese side Shimizu S-Pulse. The winner of that group advances to play the winner of Group A for a $2 million prize, runner-up bags $500,000. No word yet on whether any of the games will be televised or be made availble for streaming online. Previous winners were PSV Eindhoven in 2003, and Tottenham Hotspurs in 05.
Summer friendlies are always a mixed bag; I’m still stinging over that “game” I saw in Chicago between the Manchester United and Bayern Munich scrubs back in 2004. But there’s a good selection of teams playing, and it will be interesting to see what our squad might look like.
Group A
Bolton Wanderers, Chivas Guadalajara, Real Racing Santander, Seongnam (from Korea)
Group B
Olympique Lyon, Reading FC, River Plate, Shimizu S-Pulse
