Ortega to F.C. Dallas?!?
By: Christian | July 20th, 2008Just when it seemed like the Ariel Ortega saga was behind us, up comes this story from the Dallas Morning News of an audacious bid by MLS side F.C. Dallas to acquire the River Plate idol.
This week, John Ellinger, top assistant to Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman, will travel to Buenos Aires to see players from River Plate, with Ariel Ortega at the top of a wish list of potential signings. The visit will not be the first between the two clubs; Dallas have been in negotiations with River for weeks in hopes of securing a potential partnership between the two teams. Earlier this month River’s Vice President and General Manager were guests of Dallas GM’s Michael Hitchcock at his Texas home, and early reports claim the meeting was a successful one.
So will we be seeing Ortega in a different red and white kit? It seems unlikely. Ortega has declared his peace with Diego Simeone, was recently made captain for the second season in a row, and has stated more than once of his intention to retire with River. But with Dallas announcing they would spend what it takes to find the right player, the scenario is perhaps not that far-fetched. River President Jose Aguilar has been known to sell off players for the right price in the past, and el Burrito himself came very close to joining Estudiantes when it seemed that relations between him and Simeone were beyond repair, contradicting his statement that he would end his career at the Monumental.
Still, it would be tough to see a player in the last days of an illustrious career making the switch to a league like MLS, which, with all due respect, who be a significant drop from La Primera. But if Guillermo Barros Schelotto can transfer his diving skills from Boca to the Columbus Crew, perhaps Ortega, who on his day is still a remarkable player on any lineup, will see MLS as an attractive destination.

I’m gald to see that the MLS mgmt is agressively seeking talent from foreigh markets. That’s the best thing that can happen to the MLS to become a formidable league.

I can’t really see it happening. Now if he was coming to New York, maybe then it would make more sense…

I read where Dallas reps were supposed to be in Argentina today to negotiate some more. Must be serious. He’s totally capable of dominating a game still. Of course,he is nearing retirement. Not going to help that whole retirement league stereotype too much.

Anyone know much about Martín Galmarini? Maxi Oliva, the guy Chelsea and a few other European clubs were after seems to have gone to Tigre in return.

The Ortega deal is not happening. I think Aguilar is an idiot but he’s not a big enough idiot to know that letting a player like Ortega (who means a whole crapload to the fans) leave, would be suicide.
The assistant coach was coming down despite the lack of interest for the Ortega deal (Ortega could have tripled his salary) because FC Dallas is trying to set up a inter-team player exchange giving our young talent a chance to head to MLS to sow their oats.

Great !!! Ortega without doubt has been one of the best dribblers and playmakers in world. Such a pity that he remained under noticed and later few personal complications barred his career. I just want to see him back in Argentina national squad with jercy no. 10 before he quits and his saga ends.
