Olimpo 4 – 0 River Plate
By: Christian | December 3rd, 2007
Before I got to the debacle that is River, let me first extend my congratulations to Lanús, who over the weekend won their first ever league title after drawing 1-1 away to Boca at La Bombonera. El Granate needed only a point to guarantee that they would finish higher than second place Tigre, the season’s other unlikely success story, and the result ensured Lanús its first national title in their 92 year history. Nothing can ever replace my River winning, but it’s good to see a small club win it all, and at the end of the day, they accumulated the most points and are the deserving champions. That they did it at the Bombonera was a small bonus.
As for River, they layed a stinker away to Olimpo in a 4-0 drubbing. I was out of town and didn’t catch the game, and perhaps that was for the best. River have gone this year from inconsistent to heartbreaking to embarrassing. One more match at home to Banfield and the misery will thankfully end. You can suffer through the lowlights below.
*Interesting stat to consider – this season, River have a 1-3-0 record against the other big clubs, with draws to San Lorenzo, Racing, Independiente, and the win of course to Boca. Their record against the 4 promoted teams this season, Tigre, Huracán, San Martín, and Olimpo? All losses, including two where River allowed 4 goals. Unbelievable.

Let me be the second to congratulate Lanús. Though I was quite unimpressed by their performance against Argentinos, they are deserving champions. You should throw in that Tigre is not just a “promoted team”…they finished second.
As far as River goes…yikes. I don’t see Simeone leaving. What is José Pekerman doing these days?

What Tigre did was impressive, going from the second division last year to almost champions this season. I don’t think that’s been done since Rosario Central some 20 years ago.
Pekerman looks like he’s gonna stay put at Toluca. As for Simeone, you never know…unless he gets his reinforcements over the off season, he could just be at River come February.
