Interview with Victor Zapata
By: Christian | June 15th, 2007
His career at River at an end, el chapa will now join Liniers club Velez.
In this interview with Ole, which is posted in Spanish here, Victor talks humbly about his exiting the club, and talks about some of the hardships of the past year. He may never have been the most technically gifted on the field, but regardless of your opinion of him as a player, I think he displays a lot of class and humility.
For you English speakers, I’ve translated some quotes here:
“At the beginning of the year I wanted to finish as champion, leave winning a Copa. But we didn’t; things didn’t work out, and we have to accept it.”
“We missed having a captain like Marcelo Gallardo… a visible face to grab the reins and lead.”
“Every year was a constant battle. The people were wonderful, but I played many games, and scored many goals. I overcame many obstacles put in front of my all these years.”
“There was a lack of communications among the team in achieving our goals. Communication is important. And individually, it wasn’t achieved either. If you asked me which player had the best season, it would be hard to say.”
“I hope people will remember me for having played with all my heart in every game. There are those [fans] who love this sacrifice; the player who runs, who ’sweats’ for the jersey…River was always like that. I hope above all else that everyone understands what I sacrificed for the colors.. I DID play for that jersey…”
Suerte chapa.
