Edmonton Cup 2009: Everton 0 – 1 River Plate

By: Christian | July 27th, 2009

A wonder strike from Ariel Ortega led River Plate their second consecutive win in Canada, defeating Everton F.C. 1-0 in the Edmonton Cup this past Saturday.

Fielding a much stronger side than the one that faced Toronto FC days earlier, la banda looked much more confident and relaxed in their second pre-season friendly, with Nestor Gorosito making good use of both his first and second team players.

More impressive then River’s two game win streak was the performance of River legend Ortega, who made his first start since returning from his loan spell at B Nacional side, Independiente Rivadavia. Despite not having worn the shirt in almost a year, el Burrito looked like he hadn’t missed a step, and made a compelling case that the 35-year old playmaker can still deliver on the field. If he can build on the form he showed this Sunday and stay healthy, both on and off the pitch, then perhaps River will at last find a captain to anchor them through the season.

River’s final game Canadian friendly will be this Saturday, August 4th, against the Montreal Impact

It was good to see el Burrito score in the River Plate strip. I’ll always remember him fondly from his time at NOB and I hope he manages to stay healthy this season. River especially seems to be a team that thrives (or dies) on the backs of their idols, so if he stays straight they might make some noise this season.

Made to eat my words there I think! I thought Everton would be too quick and powerful for River but if a 35 year old alcoholic who’s been playing in the 2nd division can do that to one of the best defensive performers in the Premier League last season then things are definitely looking up!!!

Good times. Now normally I wouldn’t support Boca in anything, but I did against A.C. Milan and I will against Manchester United.
