Dropped
By: Christian | December 27th, 2007Diego Simeone made his first major move since signing on as River Plate’s new head coach, dropping 5 players today from the Copa de Verano. Bernardo Leyenda, Federico Lussenhoff, René Lima, Matías Abelairas, and Sixto Peralta will not be joining the the rest of the squad when training begins January 6th for the pre-season summer tournament.
Of those names only Lima and Abelairas ever displayed some signs of promise during their stays with the club; Matías you may remember scored that phenomenal free kick during the Peace Cup, and Lima showed occasional flashes here and there, but in the case of both players, neither were consistent enough on the pitch to keep around. Both were products of the River system. However there was no doubting the exclusion of Federico Lussenhoff; he was a key part of River’s disastrous defense this past season, and often times looked lost and out of place. Sixto Peralta joined over the summer but barely got enough minutes, nabbing 1 goal in 6 games played, but that was still more than Bernardo Leyenda who recorded no minutes and only once even made it to the bench. Look for all of them to find permanent homes elsewhere soon.
The 5 join Roly Zárate, who already signed with Barcelona de Ecuador. With the impending departures of Fernando Bellluschi and Radamel Falcao, expect more changes to come for River in 2008.

Fernando Belluschi and Radamel Falcao, where are they going to Christian?
Rangers and River!

Belluschi has joined Olympiakos of Greece. Can’t say it where I would have preferred he went, but I understand he will get CL experience. Falcao was apparently going to move to Fluminense of Brazil but I haven’t heard anything about that yet.

The Fluminense deal has been dropped. The only known team interested in Falcao since then has been their arch-rivals, Flamengo, though a transfer to the Brazilian side seems highly unlikely.

I can’t think of any good reason, aside from money, why Falcao would want to go there. I mean, if his goal is to make it to Europe, he can just as easily get seen at River than in Brazil.
