Copa Sudamericana 2nd Leg: River Plate 4 - 2 Botafogo
By: Christian | September 27th, 2007
If you haven’t heard, the Monumental was witness to a dramatic, come from behind 4-2 victory by River over Brazilian side Botafogo this past Thursday night, with the win advancing los millonarios to the next round of the Copa Sudamericana. Radamel Falcao was the hero of the night scoring 3 goals, including the game winner in injury time (Andrés Ríos scored as well). Making things even more incredible, River were reduced to 9 men after losing both Federico Lussenhoff and Oscar Ahumada to red cards, although from what I saw in the first half, losing Lussenhoff may have been a good thing. The result gives River a chance of winning at least 1 title before the years end, and has breathed life into a club coming off one of its worst weeks in recent history. Next up in the Copa, River will most likely face Defensor Sporting from Uruguay in the quarterfinals, who are all but assured of advancing following their 3-0 victory over Ecuador’s El Nacional.
I apologize for not having posted anything on River biggest, most emotional win so far this year, but horribly, I was unable to watch the second half this past Thursday. How could I have missed finishing such a classic game? Well, I won’t bore anyone with the details here, but let me just say if you’re ever in Chicago, DO NOT go to the The Globe Pub on the north side. Those bastards may market themselves as a “soccer” bar, but clearly they care more about making a dollar then serving their patrons who have supported them for years.
You can catch match highlights below, or here. Also, check out a review of the complete match here or on Soccernet. This Sunday, it’s back to league action at home to Rosario Central.

Crap they scored. That means we need three goals now. Falcao gets one back. They are down to ten men. Come on River! We need two more goals! Half time.

Botafogo is an embarrassment. The had a man advantage, needing only to keep the other team from scoring twice. The didn’t clear the ball and Rios was unmarked when he scored his goal. Unmarked in the area when his team is a man down. Embarrassing. Still, an impressive victory for River. We’ll see you in 6 days.

ANOTHER comeback. This time against Rosario Central. 2-0 at one point and then get it to 2-2. They score in the third minute of injury time but we equalise in the eight minute of injury time! I am really dissapointed with the result because we should be beating Rosario Central but so bloody relieved to get something.
