River Plate 2 - 1 Defensor Sporting

River Plate advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2008 Copa Sudamericana last night after a comfortable 2-1 victory at home over Uruguayan club, Defensor Sporting. Paulo Ferrari and Diego Barrado netted the two goals for la banda, who won 4-2 on aggregate over both legs.

Now, the squad will face Chivas de Guadalajara in the quarters. Should River defeat the Mexicans, that could potentially setup a semi-final with rivals Boca Juniors, should los bosteros defeat Brazilian club Sport Club Internacional.

River still seem shaken at the back. I’m cool with Simeone rotating player because that seems like the sophisticated move du jour among coaches but he could at least try to field the same defense so that they could get used to each other. I understand that Tuzzio was injured but still.

But, don’t get me wrong, if we win while playing like crap that’s fine with me too. I’d just like to make sure that these guys can actually play the River bad of football we are all expecting to see at some point.

I hear Simeone’s sister, Natalia, is meeting with River to talk about signing Simeone for another year. The thinking was that he would leave River for Atlético Madrid, but good luck getting “El Vasco” Aguirre out of there now that Aguero and co. have hit their stride. I think Simeone may cling to River as long as they are willing to put up with him. Unfortunately for us, Aguilar looks like he’s ready to anchor the club to him.

A good win, Chivas will be tricky opponents especially for their home game.
Rumour is that Robert Flores will return to Villarreal in January and be loaned out to a club in Spain.

Simeone is such a frustrating coach. I can’t hate him, his success cannot be attributed to luck, but he over-manages and it can be painful to watch. We might have given up on the league but even if we win the Copa Sudamericana, and that’s a big what if, 18th place is still not acceptable.

Thank God the Superclasico is coming soon, otherwise we’re stuck with the River that played today in La Plata. Yawn.

    Thanks AMid :)

I’m still here. During this international break I laid low on some other things. But you should know that the biggest match of the year is this Sunday, the Superclasico! I’ll try to get a brief preview up today, and look for my post on what will most certainly be our victory against voka.
