Clausura 2008: Lanús 0 – 1 River Plate

By: Christian | April 7th, 2008

River took a huge leap towards their quest to win their first league title since 2004, winning 1-0 against last year’s Apertura Champions Lanús yesterday afternoon. River were able to take advantage on a weekend with Boca, Estudiantes, and Vélez all dropping points, so with Diego Buonanotte’s goal in the 68th minute, River now find themselves atop the Torneo with 21 points. Much credit must be given again to keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo, who saved a penalty, and more importantly, all 3 points.

I missed the game, but who cares? River are in the lead and on their way.

Too bad you missed this one Christian, it was actually the best i had seen Buonanotte play since last season Superclasico. He was active all over the midfield and looked lethal.

I’m still trying to figure out what Abreu was trying to do when it appeared he kicked the soil in the penalty area instead of the ball, it kinda looked to me like he was waiting for the defender to take a swing at his leg and when it didn’t happen he tried to shoot only his weight was going forward when his foot was not. In either case, ugly, and not the type of play I should expect from a player of his caliber. Still, despite the win, this was not a great match, in fact, Lanús was able to score on a few occasions, José Sand looked as dangerous as ever, as did Lautaro Acosta.

I really like what I’m seeing from Buonanotte this season, Mark. The only negative is that the better he gets, the quicker he’ll get sold in the summer.

And I can see your point about El Loco, Mauro. I’m not sure what his position on the field is supposed to be. And he’s slow as molasses. Funny how he gets criticized for much of the match, has one decent pass or assist, then gets clapped off the pitch. Oh well, we’re on top the league.

Buonanotte really looked sharp this game, when he plays like that he is a joy to watch. When Loco tripped on the breakaway I had to laugh he is so awkward at times! At my house we call him the Peter Crouch of South America… still every game in Argentina reminds me of a street fight and this one was no exception. Sanchez was off form at times but no one plays at their best level every game, even a player like him. Simeone has instilled a better defense as well, they pressure the ball and cover each other much better than last year. They are far from dominating and I hope to see them come together more when Ortega comes back but hey, 4 points clear and winning close games… Vamos River!
