Chau Carrizo…
By: Christian | July 18th, 2007
River Plate keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo has signed with Italian club Lazio, ending months of speculation about the player’s future. River’s board and coach Daniel Passarella were desperate to hold on to the 23-year old rising star, but in the end, Lazio’s $10M dollar offer was too good to refuse.
This was certainly not the first bit of news I wanted to wake up to this morning. In the past year, River have let go of two of their best attackers, Ernesto Farias and Gonzalo Higuaín, and along with German Lux going to Mallorca, two outstanding keepers. Part of me feels that it’s good for the club; that the money we will get in return will bring in the reinforcements necessary to seriously challenge for the title. But it’s also a sad and depressing state of the times in Argentine football, and specifically River Plate, as talented young players are shipped away to foreign clubs for big paydays far too early.
Here’s hoping all the best for Juan Pablo, who should have a great career in Italy and with the Men’s National Team. Check out some highlights below.

He’s got his work cut out for him – and that’s a major understatement. Not only was Angelo Peruzzi an icon to the fans, they turned down one of the best young keepers in Serie A to sign JPC. As well as the fact that Lazio has next to no offensive firepower, their most talented attacker just signed with Inter and they may be losing their top goalscorer. If he doesn’t perform at a top level immediately, the ultras will kill him.

Aguante Carrizo! Hopefully he does good, he deserves it.. Too bad he wasn’t able to stay at River for atleast another year to play one more Copa Libertadores.
