Carlsberg Cup 2009: Toronto FC 0 (3) – River Plate 0 (4)

Carlsberg Cup 2009

River Plate defeated Toronto FC 4-3 on penalties to win the 2009 Carlsberg Cup last night at BMO Field before 20,005.

After a scoreless 90 minutes of regular time, River’s German Pezella spot kick gave los millonarios the victory after Toronto’s Marco Velez blasted his attempt over goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola which would have kept the Canadians alive.

As expected, River fielded a very experimental squad, but were nonetheless able to keep the MLS side at bay.

Unfortunately I was unable to watch the game. Based on different reports from sites like La Página Millonaria, there were several River fans in attendance. You can view highlights of the game at TFC TV, and view a gallery of images from LPM here.

River will be in Edmonton this Saturday to face Everton in the second of three friendlies during their Canadian tour.

I saw this game over at BMO field. Some River players showed some flair (#16 especially), but it was a fairly tame affair with little player interest – not really worth the price of admission.
