Arsenal 2 - 1 River Plate

I should have stayed in Mexico.
Apparently the rule with River this season is to not make any assumptions or predictions. After a strong first half where los millonarios played strong, attacking football, they clearly lost the plot in the second half, and a goal in the 90th minute from Arsenal ended any chance of a last minute comeback. With Independiente, Boca, and Vélez all winning, and Tigre drawing with Newell’s, River’s momentum has been stopped dead in its tracks. There’s still a long way to go in the season, and we still have to play Independiente and Boca, but River need to start playing consistently if they are to make a run at the title.
At this point there’s almost no point in analyzing players anymore. Bellushi, Ahumada, and Fernández all looked sharp, and Rubén scored his second goal of the season, but YET AGAIN, the defense could not concentrate for 90 minutes and looked to sleepwalk their way as the game went on. I certainly don’t want to take anything away from Arsenal, who played smart and took it to River, but it was a game that they knew they needed to win and simply couldn’t get it done.
This Sunday it’s against Lanus, 5PM ET on FSC, and honestly at this point anything can happen. River have shown us some great attacking football, some unlucky draws, and some true stinkers, so nothing would surprise me anymore. Nothing, of course, except for a title.
Here’s the top 10 teams
Independiente 16
Boca 16
Vélez 15
Lanús 14
Tigre 14
Argentinos 13
Arsenal 13
River Plate 12
Colón 12
Banfield 12
