Tigre 4 - 1 River Plate

Tigre 4 - 1 River Plate

Just when you thought this season’s River Plate had found every way to disappoint, it turns out they still have ways to surprise us. La Banda’s title hopes took a huge blow today with a shocking 4-1 loss to newly promoted Tigre, a game which saw River reduced to 9 men after both Ariel Ortega and René Lima were sent off in the second half. To add insult to injury, literally, Alexis Sánchez had to be taken out early in the first half after hurting his ankle, and will be out for up to 3 months.

Things started out badly when Tigre struck early in the 9th minute on a goal by Román Martínez thanks to, yet again, another weak performance by our back line. River showed little offensive threat during the first 45 minutes, with neither Radamel Falcao or Marco Rubén involved much. In the second half River began to show signs of life, with Ortega, easily River’s best on the day, leading the way, and a draw looking imminent. But a controversial goal in the 59th minute by Tigre’s Matías Giménez killed any momentum. Replays showed the player clearly used his hand, but regardless, keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo played the ball horribly to allow the chance in the first place, a shocking miscue from the usually reliable star. Néstor Ayala’s golazo two minutes later though dashed any hopes of a comeback. Rubén was able to find the back of the net off an assist by Ortega in the 66th minute, but it was too little too late; a final goal by Ayala again in the 84th minute was merely one more nail in the coffin. All in all, River were simply outplayed on the day, and Tigre deserved the win to continue their remarkable run in their return to the Primera.

As awful as the result was, was it any surprise that things were going to come to this? Today’s loss was simply the summation of everything wrong we’ve seen from River this year: sloppy defense, little imagination in attack, and a total lack of communication. But the real issue this season has simply been inconsistency. And with injuries piling up, a change is needed at the Monumental. Remember, it was a loss to Banfield in August of 2005 by the exact same score that saw former coach Leonardo Astrada resign. Will Daniel Passarella now do the same? Though he had promised to step out if River did not win a title by December, after today’s embarrassment, a midweek loss in the Copa Sudamericana, uncertainties about the remainder of the season, and the anger and frustration of fans (and one would imagine the players), you have to imagine that El Kaiser’s reign has to end now. With River’s season nearly dead, their chances of advancing in the Copa Sudamericana slim, and the season’s most important game against Boca Juniors in the Superclásico just 3 weeks away, los millonarios need a spark to salvage something from this season that began with such high promise that has yet to be fulfilled.

We have only the SuperClasico and our pride left this campaign if we fail in the Copa Sudamerica. I honestly do not know how this can be happenning to us. We have a quality squad full of good players. I can not believe or understand why this run for three years has been happenning to us. This is River, 32 times Champions, Argentine club of the 20th century. This is so heartbreaking.

You hit the nail on the head: we have a good squad. We had a great one last year. The issue is simply the lack of leadership, first the loss of Gallardo, and now Passarella who has simply lost the plot. There was a time when River was thought to be invincible. No more.

Hey Christian.. I am too pissed off too write about it in my blog. =\

A few comments on your post:
    1) To tell you the truth, I don’t think River’s chances of getting through the Copa Sudamericana are slim. We lost to Botafogo in Brazil by barely a 1 goal margin, which could have even ended in a tie for River. This is good. Why? We all know how bad we’ve been doing away this season, so really it’s not that bad to lose by that little in Brazil. Another thing is that they played with their full squad, and we were missing 5 starters (6 if you count Ojeda). Honestly, if they could barely beat us 1-0 (it could have even ended in a tie if we were more precise), I think we could beat them at home with all our starters. I am not saying it will be easy (after Tigre and San Martin (SJ), I know we all learned to not underestimate the rivals), but I wouldn’t say our chances of going through are slim either.
    2) You mentioned the Superclasico is in 3 weeks. Well, if you haven’t, I hope you find a way to get the day off of work/school: the game is actually in less than 2 weeks (October 7).

You know I saw the fixtures and didn’t realize that Fecha 12 was a midweek game. You know I was this close to going but my work won’t let me off.

I think I’m frustrated by the inconsistency this year, hence my fears for this week. You make good points; their form at home this year has been perfect, but after yesterday’s embarrassment, I think all bets are off. What worries me is conceding stupid goals. If River are going to advance at all, they have to score first and put Botafogo away in the first half. If the Brazilians score first, I don’t know if River has what it takes to bounce back.

It’s a new drama with this club every week, who knows what will happen?

True. Besides, did you read the Passarella article on Ole? It seems as if there is now a huge disconnection between the coach and the squad. How in the hell are they going to win the Superclasico or even worse, a tournament, like that? Seriously.. I can now see the team losing both tournaments on purpose so Passarella leaves in December, just like he had promised. I guess in a way that could be a good thing, but I can’t stand to wait till June 2008 for a possibility to celebrate again.

Well, I finally dealt with it and released my post dealing with the 4-1 loss. Now that I got that over with, I would like to just think of good things and imagine a positive outcome vs. Botafogo, but the fire keeps on growing as time passes. We will see what happens in 3 days.

Yeah, that midweek fixture will be against Argentinos in La Paternal…Wednesday at 3pm. Yep, I will be there.

Taib, you support Lazio and River Plate? That’s like kicking puppies AND robbing old people…

River is really schizo at the moment. As can be seen on the table, though, they are far from out of it. They need to turn things around now, but once they do, 1st place is not out of the question.

    1. I’m a Roma supporter. I don’t spend much time commenting over there, but my heart is in every match.

    2. I’m a socio of Argentinos Juniors and I write the blog for them here. I hatehatehatehatehate Boca and River. Much of it quite irrational, some of it based on matches like tonight’s (I will leave a comment in that thread). A lot of it is centered around the corruption of the directors and the continued violence practiced by the barra bravas–who are paid club employees. You stay classy, gallinas.

    Scott:

    1. I don’t care about Roma. They do not mean anything to me. I only have feelings for the clubs I love and support. To even feel emotion about Roma or any other club would be an insult. Go ahead and support Roma. I am not bothered and I will not think of you any different if you never supported Roma or any club.

    2. Keep up the good work on the blog but you can not necessarily blame violence in Argentina just on River and Boca. It is epedemic throughout Argentine football and if you want currupt look no further then AFA President Julio Grondona who comes in at half time with barras bravas and hugs them saying they are “good guys” and the referee calls the match off. River has class. We will stay classy. You must hate a lot of Argentine clubs.

    Good day to you Sir.

Oh my God, by no means did I intend to imply that Boca and River were solely responsible for the violence. But do you remember the Boca match against Guadalajara in 2005? The coach spit on Bautista and another member of the directors slapped him? Boca received no sanctions for that. River’s barra bravas have spent the better part of 2007 in a bloody battle for power, and the club takes very few steps to stop it. They are the two largest and most powerful clubs in the country (by far), but see no reason to change anything…besides the anti-racism cartoon. They are dirty from the top on down, as are many clubs in Argentina.

Same goes for Lazio. Sorry to say it, but their reputation as the most right-wing, racist club in Europe is no accident. That took years and years of work.

The important thing, the reason that Gonzalo, you, and I are all here on this site writing about our favorite clubs is what happens on the pitch. Nothing else should matter to anyone and my blood boils when I see clubs get themselves involved with nasty, violent activities. So, yes I hate many Argentine clubs. It’s a plague that I live with and it will follow me.

A good day to you as well. This is all in good fun and I know that you are not a member of any barra brava, so my beef is not with you.

Con calma boys, con calma! The problems with River, Boca, Lazio, Roma, and yes, Argentinos, are well noted and ongoing. They’re frustrating and annoying, but we are all in it for the football.

Scott: Yees I do remember. The incident when Bautista hold up four fingers up at the Boca crowd to show them the aggregate score. Then Palermo tried to hit him and chased him round the field. What about that time with Charcarita Juniors at the Bombonera? Do you remember that? There are many incidents with Boca fans. As for River fans it is disgusting but like you said these people work for the club. It is difficult for the club because these barras bravas are on the inside of the club not outside. One good rule change would be to stop having this association element to clubs. That way barras bravas can not be a parrt of the clubs structure. Argentine football has to look at itself.

As for Lazio, the ultras are right wing but so are Roma and Roma have been guilty of violence and racism in recent years on many occasions so it is really hypocritical accussing Lazio of being right wing and racist when Roma are also the same. Probably because of this the Roma fans who went to “greet” me when I made my first post never said anything about Lazio being right wing.

Taib: All in good fun, that’s the most important. I would never claim that my views are unbiased. Roma, Lazio, every Italian football club has serious right wing elements to its fan base. Lazio makes my stomach turn. Nothing but pure irrationality at work.

Gonzalo: Argentinos has problems? Now that Platense and Chacarita are in the Second Division…I haven’t heard of anything involving them for years.

Gentlemen: Please remember that I do not intend to do anything except good-natured ribbing. I am the least violent or malevolent person you will meet…I just like to talk tough. I am quite excited for the River-Argentinos match on Wednesday and will be skipping out of work early to catch it. Again, all that matters is what happens on the field.

Scott: That is where you are wrong. You just got to look at clubs like Livorno who are just so left winged that singing the Italian National Anthem would hurt them. True most Italian clubs are right winged nowadays especially in the south but not all.

On another note, How come you post one time from Argentina and then another time from United Kingdom? It is wierd.

“all Italian clubs” is a generalization, I know…the point is you can’t point at one or two clubs as the culprit.

Don’t worry, I didn’t hop on a plane to hunt you down, the site recognizes IP addresses in an inconsistent manner.
