San Martín 1 – 0 River Plate

Dejected

Sorry it took so long to post, but I still haven’t gotten over the shock, not to mention the embarassment. In what was one of the most pathetic displays of football I’ve seen in some time, River went down 1-0 to newly promoted San Martín yesterday, showing no imagination, no ideas, no fútbol. In fact, based on what I saw, the team looked just as bad as they did last season, if not worse. The story hasn’t changed: there were still the same mistakes in defense, lack of creativity in attack, an inability to finish, and above all, a clueless coach, who for no good reason still has a job. If there was one bright spot, it was again keeper Ojeda, who aside from Ortega, is one of the few talents on the squad, and showed it by even stopping a penalty.

The rest of the team looked shocking. Belluschi: learn what the offside rule is before you argue with the linesmen – for the third time. Falcao: Score a goal, or go home. Tuzzio, Villagra, Ponzio: I would criticize your performances, but apparently neither one of you showed up to play. As for Passarella, your time is up. You should have been sacked a long, long time ago. Your signings don’t pan out, your formations don’t work, and you’ve lost control of your players, not to mention the faith of millions of River fans around the world. Do us all a huge favor and leave.

Here’s the rest of the results from week 4:

Tigre 0 2 Colón
Racing 2 0 Newell`s
Arsenal 0 4 Banfield
Rosario Central 0 1 Huracán
Lanús 2 1 Olimpo
Argentinos 0 1 Independiente
Estudiantes 1 1 San Lorenzo
San Martín (SJ) 1 0 River
Boca 2 1 Gimnasia
Vélez 4 2 Gimnasia (J)

To add insult to injury, a draw from supposed challengers Estudiantes and San Lorenzo has left Independiente clear atop the table, 3 points ahead of Velez and (?)Banfield. They face Boca next, but the way they’ve looked this season, don’t expect the Red Devils to lose that top spot anytime soon.

BTW, I never saw River’s 2-2 draw away at Gimnasia(J), but from what I heard, I haven’t missed much.

“River es un grande” and they will bounce back.
But I think Passarella should step aside.
There is talent but seems they lack any motivation.

Shocking result, as you say, time for DP to be sacked, if he has any love for River he should fall on his sword now!

Who shall replace him if he leaves? Ramon Diaz, Leonardo Astrada, Americo Gallego, Marcelo Bielsa, etc. are all coaching different teams at the moment. Carlos Bianchi, who was a River Plate fan during his youth years, rejected any possibilites due to coaching Boca Juniors in the past (and being extremely successful with them!). Diego Simeone is another candidate, but why would he leave his current position (DT of Estudiantes)?

I’m not crazy about Simeone, but it isn’t completely crazy to think that he would jump at the chance if the offer was big enough. And from what I’ve seen this season, Estudiantes won’t be winning the league. I won’t jump on the Ramon bandwagon, but…he did say he wanted to coach River again.

Honestly at this point, I would take anyone else. Hell, bring back Merlo!
