River Plate 1 - 1 Independiente
By: Christian | November 5th, 2007![]()
The word “disappointing” has been used to describe many performances this season, and the same was true this past Sunday as los millonarios could not earn the 3 points desperately needed to stay alive in the league, drawing 1-1 to rivals Independiente at home.
Los rojos got on board first in the 18th minute from Carlos Matheu off a set piece, but River were able to find the equalizer off a strong Fernando Belluschi header in the 45th. Both teams came out in the second half with renewed vigor, but surprisingly neither side could find the go ahead goal. Particularly stunning was River’s lack of offensive attack, with Diego Buonanotte barley making any sort of mark on the day, and neither Matias Abelairas nor Radamel Falcao doing much better. If there was some good news for River it was keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo, who made at least 2 game winning saves, and Cristian Nasuti, who looked solid in defense replacing the injured Nicolás Sánchez. That aside, the result was not enough to gain ground in the standings, and River now sit in 6th place with 23 points, 7 behind current leaders Lanús with 4 matches remaining.
So as we have seen so many times this year, River could not get the result when they needed it most, yet another in a series of missed opportunities that has left la banda on the outside looking in. With the league title all but out of reach, River will now throw everything they have into their Copa Sudamericana semifinal with Arsenal this week, in the hopes of coming away with one piece of silverware this year.

What about rumors? Have a chance to replace Pasarella at the headcoach position?
To my mind, team has no progress at their game for a long time.Posted from

I honestly haven’t followed the rumors as closely as I should have, focusing instead on the sinking ship that is this year’s team. The last name I heard floating around was Diego Simeone from Estudiantes. Personally I think he would be a great choice given his success with the La Plata club, leading them to a title a year ago, and three straight victories against their main rivals Gimnasia. But I doubt if Estudiantes would let him go so easily. Stay tuned.

Christian, by the way, could you advise any english-based web site about River? News, highlights, overviews. Frankly, i’m weak in Spanish but would like to get last information about team events. Even official site doesn’t provide info in English for a long time

Amid, unfortunately River sites in English are few, which is one of the reasons I started this blog. But here are some options:
http://r-i-v-e-r.blogspot.com/ - Another great blog.
http://www.riverplate.com/category/69.html
http://www.riverplate.com/category/68.htmlThe official “unofficial” fan website is mainly in Spanish, but the two links above are in English.
